MTC Launches Sustainable Additive Manufacturing Hub
The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) has established a new hub dedicated to additive manufacturing, representing a substantial step towards sustainable manufacturing practices. This hub aims to drive the development of net-zero products with complete circularity, setting a new standard in the industry.
Advanced 3D Printing Technology
The new facility is equipped with polymer and ceramic additive manufacturing machines. These machines will play a crucial role in producing net-zero products. Additionally, the hub includes material reprocessing equipment designed to recycle waste materials and parts, transforming them into reusable feedstocks.
Key equipment in the hub includes the Lithoz CeraFab S65, which processes materials such as Alumina, Silicon Nitride, and Aluminium Nitride, and the Carbon M3, known for printing high-performance polymers. The hub also features polymer granulation and feedstock forming systems, ensuring a fully circular polymer manufacturing process.
Sector Support and Sustainability
The MTC's new hub is positioned to strengthen its support for the aerospace, defense, and energy industries. By emphasizing renewable, bio-based, recycled, and recyclable materials, the MTC aims to enhance the sustainability profile of additive manufacturing technology. This initiative is aligned with the MTC's ongoing collaborations with industry partners such as Ai Build and Weir, which focus on scaling up the utilization of sustainable materials in manufacturing processes.
Leadership and Strategic Direction
Ross Trepleton, the Associate Director for Component Manufacturing at the MTC, emphasized the importance of sustainable materials in propelling additive manufacturing technology forward. He stated, "As additive manufacturing technology progresses, finding materials that are renewable, bio-based, recycled, and recyclable is crucial to enhancing its sustainability credentials. By investing in more innovative equipment, we can continue to support customers and partners in paving the way for a more environmentally-friendly future for this technology."
The establishment of this hub reflects MTC's commitment to pioneering sustainable practices in manufacturing, showcasing the potential of advanced 3D printing technology in achieving environmental goals. With this initiative, the MTC not only enhances its own capabilities but also sets a benchmark for the industry, driving forward the vision of a sustainable manufacturing future.
