AMAREA® Technology, a Fraunhofer IKTS spin-off, specializes in multi-material 3D printing to develop advanced ceramic and metal components for harsh environments, including reusable igniters for satellite engines.
Fully Reusable Igniter for Aerospike Engines
AMAREA® Technology is a spin-off of Fraunhofer IKTS, the largest ceramics applied research institute in Europe.
As a leading specialist in multi-material 3D printing with high-performance materials, AMAREA Technology develops and distributes industrial 3D printers that can combine up to six different materials, such as technical ceramics or metals, to create highly functional components for harsh environments. The company also offers access to a large material portfolio.
By simultaneously additively manufacturing ceramics and metals through Multi Material Jetting (MMJ), it is possible to integrate electrically conductive paths within insulating ceramic components.
Thanks to their excellent material properties, ceramic components are ideally suited to withstand harsh environments, such as those posed by small satellite thrusters. MMJ can be used, for example, to 3D print actuators and sensors integrated into ceramic satellite and propulsion components.
The latest satellite engines require recyclable or, rather, reusable ignition devices, which is crucial for the development of flight targets for small satellites in orbit.
The transient plasma igniter consists of two different \( Si_{3}N_{4}-MoSi_{2} \) (Silicon Nitride - Molybdenum Disilicide) materials, an electrically conductive and an electrically insulating material configuration.
